Blogging Etiquette


Students are to understand that blogging is an intellectual exercise that highlights their individual thought processes. As more and more individuals begin to blog online, those who participate need to recognize the value of formalized etiquette. The following are several simple rules of blogging etiquette that are meant to bolster an individual's credibility, while maintaining an atmosphere of standards.

1. Bloggers need to realize their ideas are a representation of their individual thoughts. Bloggers must also realize that these thoughts become public knowledge as soon as a blog is published. Therefore, their publish thoughts are part of their permanent record, and must be considered when constructing ideas. The simplest way to determine whether or not their blog is acceptable, bloggers should use a simple litmus test. Is what I am publishing something I will feel comfortable with ten years from the date of publication.

2. Bloggers should strive for accuracy. Whenever a blogger utilizes other links, give proper credit.

3. Recognize that this is an intellectual exercise. Bloggers should use reason and emotional intelligence when publishing a post, or commenting on another individuals blog. Never launch a personal attack. Emotional attacks are usually devoid of reason and will often be a source to discredit your ideas.

4. If you use online sites, link to those sites.

5. If you make the claim that something is fact, be sure that it is exactly that, a fact.

6. Use spell check. We are all human; however, mis-spelled words work to discredit your thoughts and ideas.

7. Whenever you comment on another individuals blogs, look to continue the intellectual exchange. Discuss your thoughts on the idea. There is only one you, people are interested in your thoughts of the issue. Do not formulate some flowery
